Summer is Almost Here: Background Screening and Provisional Hires
Summer cannot come soon enough. With record snowfall in the Northeast and a cold winter on the East Coast, summer will not arrive a moment too soon.
Many high school and college students will be looking for summer employment and with recovery almost 100% many employers are seeking provisional hires. And summer employment can be a valuable experience for today’s youth.
From CapitalGazette.com (Apr. 03, 15):
"Summer employment offers youth more than just a paycheck. Youth are given a chance to explore a career path through hands-on experience, allowing them to make informed decisions in the future."(1)
In years past summer began on Memorial Day but to take advantage of overseas travelers the summer “season” often starts closer to Easter or Spring Break. National amusement parks such as Disneyland or Six Flags, and smaller regional parks begin to ramp up employment in late winter or early spring.
From www.McCall.com (Mar. 27, 15):
"Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom will be filling 2,500 positions for the 2015 season, which starts May 1…Dorney Park says it has a range of jobs, including admissions, cash control, entertainment, food and beverage, games, guest services, human resources, lifeguards, marketing, maintenance, merchandise, rides, safety and security, park services and warehouse. Persons ages 15 and older are encouraged to attend." (2)
Further, hiring takes place at facilities related to amusement parks such as hotels, restaurants, and related.
Recently, Ocean City, New Jersey sponsored a job fair for summer employment.
From OceanCity.com (Apr. 03, 15):
"Dozens of local businesses will crowd into the Ocean City convention center on 40th Street Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to find the perfect candidate for the estimated 12,000 jobs, temporary and professional, required to make Ocean City work during the summer." (3)
Adam Almeida, President and CEO of CriminalBackgroundRecords.com states: “Employers sometimes make the mistake of not conducting criminal background checks on temporary or provisional hires. A hire is a hire and in the spirit of risk mitigation one should conduct background checks on all potential employees.”
Risk mitigation and loss reduction remain central challenges in hospitality and retail hiring, regardless of term or form of employment. Restaurants, clothing stores, or amusement parks should screen employees to prevent loss and mitigate risk.
Loss from employee theft remains a significant challenge to retailers.
From www.CSOOnline.com (Mar. 26, 15):
"Retail theft is a huge and costly problem for the industry. According to the “Global Retail Theft Barometer 2013-2014,” released by Checkpoint Systems in October 2014, total shrinkage among retailers in North America was $42 billion for the time period covered by the report." (4)
Fortunately background screening need not be a significant expense.
A simple background check can prove to be a valuable tool to employers. There are several reports one may require to complete this process:
- Social Security Number Trace – offers verification of current and recent address by county as well as associated AKAs.
- Criminal History Report – offers the most current information available on recent convictions at the National, Statewide and Courthouse levels.
- Sex Offenders Records Check – offers information on any recent registrants based on crimes of a sexual nature.
Almeida states: “A background check from a third party background screening company will greatly assist in reducing loss in a retail/hospitality environment, specifically with temporary or short-term employees. The cost of employee theft prevented by background screening greatly outweighs the cost of the pre-employment check.”
CriminalBackgroundRecords.com is a third-party background screening company that can provide low cost and highly effective pre-employment background screening packages for provisional and summer employees.
