Nanny screening in the USA is very important and knowing what makes a childcare background check sufficient is also important.  The last thing you want to do is put your child or children in jeopardy by not conducting a nanny background check before leaving your children with a new childcare provider.  Nanny background checks should include as a minimum a criminal background check and national sex offender registry check.  You should also run additional criminal background checks on any alias names the potential nanny/au pair has or may have used in the past to uncover any criminal records associated with one of those alias nanny names. 

A nanny is considered more than just a babysitter, because they often live with the family they are employed by.  This means a great deal more than leaving your kids with someone for just a couple of hours here and there.  The difference between a nanny and an au pair is primarily that a nanny is usually a domestic citizen that has grown up and still lives in the USA, while an au pair is from a foreign country and is allowed temporary residence in the USA if they are staying with a US host family who needs a nanny or childcare provider.

If you plan on allowing your childcare provider (nanny, babysitter, au pair) to drive around with your child/children in a vehicle with the nanny behind the wheel, you may also want to conduct a driving history check on the nanny as well as a criminal background check before hiring him/her.  A driving history report can be obtained from State DMV Records.  It is highly recommended that a full statewide driving record check be conducted on the potential nanny if they are expected to say drive your children to school or extracurricular activities without you being present.

As a parent you will most certainly want to run an Social Security Number Verification & Address History Trace in order to verify the childcare provider has a legitimate social security number and that the addresses the nanny has said she has lived at match up with the report.  And lastly as part of a complete nanny background check you may want to perform an education verification to verify degrees earned etc…    If any red flags come up after performing the various background checks that makeup a full nanny background check, then you may be dealing with a problem candidate.
